This small Indonesian island city is just 45 minutes by ferry from Singapore, and is the second most popular destination in Indonesia for international tourists. Famed for its nightlife and youthful vibe, Batam is also rich in cultural and religious attractions. The wide range of sites to explore includes Kampung Jabi Tourism Object, the Vietnam Refugees Camp, Setokok Village , Duta Maetreya Vihara, Cetya Tri Darma Pagoda as well the Japanese Cemetery – an ancient burial yard – and Tumenggung Abdul Jamal's Tomb.

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya

One of the largest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia . Also known as the Laughing Buddha temple, this modern sacred space brings in thousands of visitors daily.
 


Art, Literature and Folk Games

Throughout Batam Island , visitors can experience a range of traditional folk dancing and music, handed down from generation to generation. Experience the beats of the Kompang and the Rebana (shallow drums), and performances like the Zapin Dance, Joget, Lukah Gila, Joget Dangkung, Jogi Dance, Gyro Bowl, Congkak Jong. There are also shows at the Mak Yong Sampan Kolek Theater as well as Traditional Sonnet, Poetry and Gurindam Readings.

Barelang Filsabillah Bridges

Six spectacular bridges link the tiny island of Tonton Nipah to the larger Setoko, Rempang, Galang, and Galang Baru Islands , affording visitors convenient access, and the feeling that they are actually traveling on a single big island. At a height of 38 meters, and spanning 642 meters in length, the first bridge connecting Batam to Tonton Island is truly impressive. Thereafter, proceed to Galang Island , on which you will find the Ngha Trang Memorial Wall in tribute to the boat people of Vietnam , and Galang Museum.

Camp Vietnam Village

Vietnam Village is the site of the former refugee camp of the Vietnamese Boat People Village between 1976 and 1996. Visit an exact replica of one of the boats used in 1975 by the Vietnamese people to cross the seas in order to escape a homeland fraught by civil war. Quan An Tu Monastery, built in 1984, is the island's most visited attraction.
